A brand new season of literary events supporting local and new writers, as well as giving you a chance to get up and have a go with an open floor spot. Mark Miller is a poet, author, translator and editor and is renowned for his sparkling humour. Ann Wilson is well known on the comedy and performance poetry circuits, having appeared at numerous festivals throughout the Country. Geraldine Green had her first volume of poetry published by Flarestack

Pub Scripts

Pub Scripts is an opportunity for local writers to pen a five minute play to be performed in a pub. For each event, a number of plays will be professionally produced and performed during the course of one evening in several different pubs. this project. organised by SCP takes writing and performance to their limits by introducing both into the heart of the community - unannounced and uninvited It's raw It’s real. It’s unpredictable. And one thing's for sure if you go down to the pub be sure of a big surprise.

A unique opportunity to meet a poet imprisoned in Malawi from September 1987 to May 1991; detained without charge or trial. Currently Wordsworth Trust Writer-in-residence, Jack has been very active in literature in Southern Africa, has run writers’ workshops in schools, colleges, libraries and prisons in the UK, and holds or has held fellowships at several universities in the UK and Holland. Be there in good time to make sure of a floor slot. With music and breaks to buy drinks from the bar.

Ian McMillans Big Family Show

A fantastic show for all the family Broadcaster, comedian and Poetry Footballer of the Year, Ian McMillan sparkles in mid-field and produces devastating verses from outside the box. Ian is Barnsley FC’s Poet-in-Residence, Yorkshire TV’s Investigative Poet and Humberside Police’s Beat Poet. He hosts The Verb on R3 and guests regularly with Mark Radcliffe, Front Row, A Room with a Clue, Sky Sports and 5 Live. His latest volume, Perfect Catch, is a belting collection of poems, plays and collaborations with musicians, actors, radio producers and ordinary and extraordinary people. For children, there’s The Invisible Villain.

Word Posters

Artist Amy Creech has been commissioned to work with writers’ groups and individuals to create an exhibition of beautiful work. Word Posters are a way of blending words, collage and images and are exhibited in the Owl Barn for the duration of the festival.

 

Original views - similar but different

An exhibition of paintings by Christine Stretch, designed to reveal some of the problem solving processes involved in making art. Two versions of each picture are on display. Either picture, in each pair could have been a final version. The viewer can decide which s/he prefers. On display in venues throughout the festival.

Tuesday 25th February ‘From the Theatre of the Absurd to Stand Up Comedy in One Giant Leap’ by Ann Wilson

Stand up comedian and performance poet Ann Wilson explores the links between Theatre of The Absurd and alternative stand up, looking at the roots of both movements and the effects they have had on society.

'Norman Nicholson and the Pot Geranium' by Neil Curry

Neil Curry edited the Collected Poems of Norman Nicholson for Faber & Faber in 1994 and has written a Northern Lights pamphlet on him. His new collection of poems (his fourth from the Enitharmon Press) entitled "The Road to the Gunpowder House" is due out in March. An earlier collection "Ships in Bottles" was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation.

 

Thursday 27th February

'Scripting' by Tim Young

Tim discusses the art of scripting dialogue that will ultimately be translated into an audio-visual format or film by director, cinematographer and actor. The talk will reference Bertolucci’s The Conformist showing later in the day.

 

Friday 28th February

'In conversation with Hull fiddler, songwriter and storyteller

Jim Eldon

An authority on, and the authentic voice of, the East Riding folk and maritime tradition. Jim's own songwriting embraces the spirit of punk and new wave. As a storyteller Jim has made many festival and radio appearances including the London International Storytelling Festival at the South Bank Centre. Jim will be in 'conversation' with Andy Richardson about music and song.

Sandra Glover has had numerous books published including ‘The Nowhere Boy’ and ‘Face to Face’ and has been writing professionally since 1997, following a successful career in teaching. She has four new books due out in the next two years.

Entries are now invited for the first ever South Cumbria Poet Laureate.
