ULVERSTON CARNIVAL DAY
SAT. JULY 5th July 2003
The
history of Ulverston carnival Day can be traced back to 1900 when the townsfolk first
organised a fund-raising parade to benefit the local cottage hospital. It has been an
almost permanent fixture on the towns social calendar ever since raising countless
thousands of pounds for many local charities.
Carnival Day
brings out local families in their thousands and attracts visitors from all over the
country. We expect that over 15,000 will crowd into town at the beginning of July to turn
the town into a
riot of noise and colour throughout the day.
The days entertainment starts in the town centre at 10.00 am where the traditional street market brings the normal hustle & bustle to the Saturday streets. Street entertainers and bands will be performing around town until the Grand Parade starts at 1.00pm. All the town centre is officially closed to traffic from midday when the build up commences for the Grand Parade. After the Carnival Parade has snaked around the town centre streets, the crowds in town can follow on to Ford Park for the Carnival Gala.
This year the Gala will include fairground rides & stalls, classic vehicle
display, arena for the dancing competitions, tea and beer tents, entertainers, trade and
charity stalls and caterers. There is always plenty of space for family picnics.
Do arrive early for the best places to watch the Parade. Programmes will be on sale from
early morning.
